History of NLP

I had bought a house cash in 2007 and friend Kirston moved in temporarily. The house had holes in the floor, no windows, doors, electric, or plumbing. I invested $40,000 fixing it up. Just before this, I did the last of my sharing NLP training locally as remodeling and meeting Ed took up all my time although I kept a few clients.

NLP was first developed in the early70s & 80s by Richard Bandler (computer programmer and Gestalt Therapist) and John Grinder (Linguist). There are quite a few books online they wrote you could read. They were trying to figure out why some therapists really didn’t help anyone where others like Milton Erickson and Virginia Satir did. So they filmed and studied/modeled these people and tried to copy what they did with other clients to help others. Out of this they developed a basket of techniques, named it NLP, and taught it to others that helped people with their thinking and removed emotional or behavior problems. These guys were into understanding thinking. Bandler was into control. The language of the mind. Their material is mostly used in business or with the government de-programming people. Bandler had a stomach tumor that he kept in check using this info and what he learned. He is still alive today, I believe. The pair that started this broke up over some personal or ethical differences but continued teaching others and writing books each in their own way. They have some very good books out there especially “Using Your Brain for a Change” by Richard Bandler if you can still find it in print. I took their training in the 80s and became certified.

Next, Robert Diltz took those techniques and what he had learned from them and applied the body of information and techniques to health. His 75+ mother had end stage cancer so he started applying these techniques to her. They just wanted to see what would happen since they had nothing to lose as she was going to die anyway with only a few months to live. Her cancer left and she lived another 15 years. Diltz developed the techniques further and added more. I took his training in the 80s and became certified in that also. He used to add patients to his classes that were working on their cancers. He was wonderful but unfortunately his partner was killed in an auto accident so he left California and moved to Australia. I think recently his son is trying to re-start his training in Santa Cruiz, CA. You could look him up.

I finished my master ‘train the trainer’ training with Mary Hail-Hanif in FL (now deceased 2021) who also added to the field and I continued to work with clients through the 890s and early 90s and train others. I also had a TV show bringing people live on the show demonstrating some of the NLP techniques and Emotionology models. In the 90s was when I was able to discover the information of how and why these techniques worked, labeling it ‘Emotionology’, so published the books about this on my website emotionology.org also online. There are 4 models that explain how this all works – the science behind NLP  Emotionolgy. Don’t buy them, I need to re-write them. I just published them to copy write the material.
